General chit chat and shit talk.

Prices of government controlled goods and services almost never go down. Also, power usage increases negates efficiency improvements (see huge energy sinks like AI centers for an example). And, when you add to that the insanity of governments also shutting down energy sources (Massachusetts is trying to kill off natural gas, for example), you also lose the energy "surplus" that was supposed to be achieved by efficiency improvement).

Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries (From his essay "How to Justify a Private Library"):

[SPOILER="It's not very long, but the forum would probably cut it off, so I'll post it in the spoiler and keep it whole". Think of it as fuel for thought]

It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones.
There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion.

If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the ‘medicine closet’ and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That’s why you should always have a nutrition choice!

Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity.

It wasn't icy on thanksgiving, but it was pretty close to that as far as the way the driving was going. it was the most petrified i have ever been driving minus another Thanksgiving-ish commute from work to home in the late 90s. You cannot avoid hills, twists and turns anywhere out here in the country.

What are you all doing for New Year's Eve? I ended up picking up a shift tonight but pays double OT.
Patching some servers, finalizing and RDS rollout ... Avoiding the roads.

Not beating my meat
I guess I'll beat mine twice in honor of you.

Might be going out for dinner and then to a friend's house, might be staying home and enjoying the night as we usually do. It depends on whether or not the friend's migraine clears up in the next 45 minutes or so.

I'm gonna be sitting on my ass in front of the tv watching ohio state miami. There's a freaking blizzard outside. it's been snowing like a bitch all day and there's no end in sight. I am not a huge fan of going out on new year's eve whatsoever.

New Years is what we called "Amatuer night". All the non drinkers get hammered and then drive like idiots.

Since we don't have a NASCAR thread that I recall:

NASCAR commissioner Steve Phelps has resigned following backlash over the controversial texts he sent last year.

Phelps was made NASCAR’s first commissioner last year, but now says he will leave at the end of the month, before the start of the 2026 season, according to ESPN.

The resignation follows the release of some of the texts he sent to NASCAR leadership during the vetting process.
In one text, for instance, Phelps supposedly called Hall of Fame team owner Richard Childress “a stupid redneck” who “needs to be taken out back and flogged.”

The text’s revelation prompted Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris to call for Phelps’ resignation...

NASCAR Leadership will have to keep destroying the sport without a commissioner.
