Week 1 postmortem thread.

Mike Vrabel admitted that the Patriots would evaluate whether Drake Maye had too much on his plate.

But the Maye doesn’t believe that to be the case.

“I wouldn’t say that,” the quarterback said during his weekly appearance on “WEEI Afternoons.” “At the end of the day, playing quarterback in the NFL can be a lot on your plate no matter what team you play for. ... I think I’m ready for it and I think I’ll get more and more comfortable each week as I play in this offense.”...

Does Drake Maye think he has too much on his plate? Patriots QB weighs in

The reality of this team is:

This team's RB1 hasn't been playing like an RB1 for at least 2 years
This team's WR1 is coming off of an ACL surgery
This team's OLT/OLG is a pair of rookies
This team's OC is not NFL starter level

So they couldn't run the ball when they tried because the IOL couldn't get any push. And the QB screwed up drive after drive with shitty decision making and bad throws which were not a product of either game plan or round peg/square hole. You can't keep air mailing passes to wide open receivers because of bad mechanic and happy feet, and that is true no matter what offensive system you are running. And you can't deliberately throw balls downfield under pressure when your mechanics suck and you've been air mailing passes to wide open receivers, no matter what offensive system you're running. Drake Maye is a game losing stiff right now, regardless of what system you put him in, and he has been since the moment he was prematurely given the startig job.

And until he stops being a stiff, this team is going to struggle, easy schedule or not. So, I don't mean this literally (though it's close to it), but none of this was McDaniels. And (not to point to you, but only because I'm using your post as the trigger) I'm sick and fucking tired of OCs being blamed for shitty QB and offensive play.

Skippy Sucks Too. Should've been Chip Kelly.

I don't think it can be overstated just how bad McDaniels' performance was on Sunday. Not only did he single-handedly cost the team the game, but he may have put forth the single worst offensive coordinator showing of all-time.

Tom Curran sees it, too, as everyone should (and the part in bold shows that Maye sees at least some of it, himself):

Curran: This Drake Maye quote highlights where young QB needs to improve
Sees what? That Pop is a midget and literally every QB in the NFL would miss him high?

Seasoned veteran and respected QB, and one of my favorite Patriots of all-time, Jacoby JaJuan Brissett, refused to target Pop last year. He knew that he was impossible to throw to because of his size.

It's actually a miracle that Maye hit him for that TD.

Get Chism in there.

Maye was #6 in terms of time to throw.
Maye had a bunch of receivers who were wide open

The offensive problems boiled down to Maye not playing well and the OL not getting enough push on run plays. It wasn't play calling. It wasn't the wide receivers. it wasn't the tight ends. It was 2 of the 3 things that were supposed to be offensive strengths for this team (along with Henderson receiving out of the backfield) failing.

I had to watch it on my phone so it was hard to see the details, but I was expecting to see Drake take off running more than he did.

I hope it’s not something they’re “saving” because this team isn’t good enough to get cute in September like before.

I thought we drafted a duel-threat quarterback. He’s bigger than most quarterbacks. I thought he’d be making more things happen if he had to.

Maye didn’t look great and some of those play calls made me think Josh is having a harder time moving on from Tom than we are.

Also, those running back dump offs to the sideline worked a lot better when D’s were scared of Brady torching them between the numbers. If they’re gonna’ do that, just ****ing run it.

Every time I saw that play it looked like a sloppy, retarded, gay version of stuff we used to do.

He’s going to need to run more. The interior looks like shit. Onwenu was absolute garbage against stunts and twists on Sunday.

He had 2 concussions last year. It's would be folly to have him doing much running until he becomes a better overall QB and he demonstrates that he's learned to protect himself.

Basically, unleash Drake Maye.

It’s year 2. If he can do it, let’s see at least regular flashes of it.

The Vikings and McCarthy last night is a great example of how to handle a new QB and he’s a ****ing rookie. Here’s the play call, go make a play.

Worked for Brady, Manning, Ben, Vick, etc.

Every offense I watched this week played in week #1 like it was the fucking play offs. Was an intense opener and that’s because the league is full of young quarterbacks that want to reign at the top of the pyramid above all the others.

Want to see a lot more of that from the Patriots all around.

I’m expecting him to start playing a lot better, but it was still disheartening to see how well McCarthy played in his debut knowing he could be wearing Patriot blue.

Dude even won a championship with an undefeated season at Michigan. Like WTF. League should have just assigned him to us.

But I still believe. Let’s goooo.

Agreed, and that is why we lost. Josh has a fetish for watching QBs play from the pocket. He can satisfy that fetish by watching football games from a decade ago. There is no need to let that sexual desire impact the way he coaches this offense in 2025.
