A new explosive lawsuit accuses the North Carolina Tar Heels of illegally hiring legendary head coach
Bill Belichick to take over their football program.
After a year away from coaching,
Bill Belichick signed a multi-year deal to take over as the head football coach at Chapel Hill. This marked Belichick’s first college coaching gig, as he was employed by an
NFL team every year from 1975 to 2023.
But in a stunning new lawsuit filed by former UNC provost Chris Clemens, the Tar Heels now face accusations of conducting illegal matters to hire the six-time
Super Bowl-winning head coach.
Per Amanda Christovich of
Front Office Sports, Clemens filed the lawsuit in Orange County, North Carolina. According to Christovich, Clemens alleges UNC of breaking “state laws to hide discussions about the hiring of football coach Bill Belichick, as well as conversations about potential conference realignment.”
Clemens accuses the UNC board of wanting to “punish” the former provost for “leaking closed-session information” to other staffers. They asked Clemens to resign, which he did in May.
More from Christovich:
“In his complaint, Clemens alleged three instances related to the UNC athletic department that he says demonstrated a “systematic misuse of closed sessions to hide policy debates from public view.” The complaint said the board treats the North Carolina Open Meetings Law and the Public Records Law as “a suggestion.”
Most notably, Clemens alleges that on Dec. 12, 2024, the board called an “emergency meeting” that was illegally conducted as a closed session to discuss and approve of the hiring of Belichick. The board then held a public vote to affirm Belichick’s hiring and the terms of his contract.”
More to come.

The 73-year-old Bill Belichick made headlines earlier this month when he
banned Patriots scouts from attending UNC practices. Additionally, Belichick’s relationship with
Jordon Hudson has attracted plenty of media coverage, something the former notably loathed in New England.
Hudson, who’s
49 years younger than Bill Belichick, has been hit with nonstop “gold digger” accusations ever since the two went public with their relationship. In fact, the couple filed a trademark for “gold digger” just last month.
As for the on-field product, the Belichick era got off to a disastrous start, with UNC losing 48-14 to TCU in the season opener. They rebounded with consecutive wins, only to get blown out 34-9 by UCF on Saturday.
Belichick and the Tar Heels will look to get back above .500 when they host the Clemson Tigers at noon EST on Oct. 4.
