Belichick agrees to become Head Coach of UNC

@Dingleberry you’ll recall our conversation about Stevie leaving his DC job at Washington? That decision is looking worse by the day.

I think my point was that he may have valued more time coaching with his old man than worrying about his own coaching legacy. If I'm in his shoes, I'd spend the time with my dad. If it damages my own future coaching career somewhat, I'll survive.

Depends what his priority was.

You think Steve spent some time bonding with his dad in the showers?

Maybe. He looks freaky.

You are being obtuse though if you don't acknowledge how amazing it must be for a kid to coach with his legendary coach dad...probably his last coaching job. And I'm sure he's not hurting for money. Maybe he valued family over career. Honestly, that sounds like good priorities to me.

I’d also rather live in Chapel Hill than anywhere in Washington state.

It takes a lot to get someone banned over there. There was a guy over there named midgar who was absolute horror show of a poster. he finally did get banned. I don't know why or what finally triggered it. I wouldn't have banned her for having an incorrect opinion for sure.
I got banned for antisemitism :(

BB struggled when he didn't have Brady, but he was an all-time coach when he had THE QB. That's not all that unusual for NFL coaching. Very few of even the best coaches are able to be elite with lesser QBs. Really, if you take away Gibbs, you're pretty much done listing those guys.

But Belichick's NFL mediocrity without Brady is why I've said that BB was "one of the best ever", and that I'd probably put Lombardi as the G.O.A.T.
Tom may have killed Bill. The freedom to draw in average 1st level talent so that you can bring in higher ranked 2nd level talent is a rare thing. BB was a master of that - his next man up approach was able to work, unlike other teams where the drop-off is insane.

Then Tom was gone, and he didn't have the 1AAA Gold Standard QB any more. But he didn't, or couldn't, adjust.

He saw BB's appreciation for his own dad, and saw he had the chance to do the same. Yup, if true I cannot blame him one bit.

But Bill never won anything before Tom, either.

I won’t take anything away from Bill except the Brady departure, but that was also the best thing for his overall legacy. He went to the shit ass Bucs and took them to the Super Bowl as a #5 Seed his first year there. Watching that destroy what was left of Brady haters’ souls will never be replicated in professional sports.

Would Brady have won 10 rings if he had Bruce Arians his entire career? He would have had ten if Aaron Hernandez wasn’t running around Boston killin’ people.

I was hating on Bill probably more than anyone when Tom and Gronk were in Tampa but now that the dust has settled I think Belichick is a G.

But I know he’s going to the Dolphins.

Belichick should be a golf cart guy on Nantucket that stops occasionally to give a reporter his opinion on the Patriots.

He was on the way with Cleveland until the rug was pulled from under him.

That's speculation, and it's based upon only one season (1994), which then took a nosedive the following year (a nosedive that many blame on the team's ownership):

But was it really all about the move, or was there more to it? I generally give BB the credit of the improved 11-5 more than focusing on the following season, but.....

For example, Testaverde's numbers improved in several areas, yet stayed basically the same in key areas (i.e. TDs). And the team had moved on from Metcalf, and was no longer using Hoard in the passing game (A combined drop from 92 catches on 153 targets to just 13 catches on 16 targets), while the focus of that RB passing game became concentrated almost entirely in the hands of the aging Earnest Byner (from 11 catches on 15 targets to 61 catches on 84 targets) and a significant dropoff in yards per reception, as the offense fell from 11th to 25th, while the defense was dropping from 1st to 20th.

Looks like a couple of players did well while the rest of the team crapped itself, maybe over the moving situation, right? Well.... not so fast. Scoring (offense/defense)

1991: 293/298
1992: 272/275
1993: 304/307
1994: 340/204
1995: 289/356

Historically, his 1994 season is an outlier, both in his non-Brady coaching in general, and in his Cleveland days particularly.

I agree to a point but if Bill had actually drafted better especially the second half of Tom's career, the Pats would have 10 SBs.

Yep: 2006, 2007, 2011, 2017.
2017, we would have won just by virtue of playing Butler. Our run D was already cooked, but Bill decided he wanted to destabilize the pass D because he favored discipline over winning the only game that you sign up to win.

This dumb fat fuck almost ruined the New England Patriots with his lack of knowledge of the sport. Luckily, we have a guy who actually knows how to coach and evaluate talent now. Vrabel saved this franchise.

It’s also fair to apply a “prime” to coaching. Managing a bunch of jock kids when you’re a million years old is probably hard AF.
