I used to be ok with a yo yo but nothing anywhere close to any of the tricks he was doing! I could walk the dog, cats cradle and a few other minor tricks.

Same here, sort of. I could do a couple of very rudimentary standard tricks, but I was better at using it as a weapon in martial arts practicing.

I 've used a yo yo to lift up a chick's skirt one time by accident when I was in Junior High. I did an "around the world" but caught her skirt and lifted it up to expose her panties. I got suspended for 3 days.
