If you want to read a book of the Bible in one sitting, this is a good one. One chapter, only 21 verses. But it packs a punch!
Written by the prophet Obadiah in the 840's B.C., God speaks thru Obadiah and delivers a brutal message to Edom. Who is Edom? They were a brother nation of Israel who traced their ancestry back to Esau. Remember him? The brother of Jacob (Israel). When the Babylonians conquered Israel, many Jews fled to Edom only to be mistreated, abused, imprisoned, and even killed by the Edomites. The book of Obadiah is God's warning to Edom what is coming their way. And it DID come their way. Another prophet of God who was proven correct.
So many of God's warnings apply to us today.
1:1 - "Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom..."
Here we go!
1:3 - "The pride of your heart has deceived you...you say in your heart, 'Who will bring me down to the ground?'"
Arrogance and pride. God is not impressed with those traits at all. Let's see WHO will bring them down.
1:4 - "Though you ascend as high as the eagle, and though you set your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down, says the LORD."
The haughty will be humbled.
1:12 - "You should not have gazed on the day of your brother (Israel) in the day of his captivity, nor should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; nor should you have spoken proudly in the day of their distress."
Taking joy in the misery of others? Bad idea.
1:15 - "As you have done, it shall be done to you.; your reprisal shall return upon your own head."
If you are Edom, this is when you shard your pants!
1:21 - "Then saviors shall come to Mount Zion to judge the mountains of Esau, and the kingdom shall be the LORD's"
Foreshadowing of Jesus/disciples preaching word of salvation.
