They already screwed it up by adding the 7th team and killing off the 2nd bye. Goodell doesn't care what the fans think. He cares what he thinks, he cares what the owners think, and he cares about the money, almost certainly in that order.

I don't mind the NFL changing the format as teams in shit divisions with poor records shouldn't get rewarded with a home playoff game. In fact, I've been wanting the NFL to get rid of divisions for years now as rivalries have been dead for a long time. Also, I'm tired of seeing the Pats play the same teams twice per year.
The NBA needs to change the playoff format. Absolutely horrible! Why the hell are the top two seeds playing each other in each conference in the 2nd round while the two lowest seeds are given an easier path to the Conference Finals?

Winning your division earns that home game vs a Wild Card team.
Why? It's not about rivalries, it's about pride. One division loss can reshape a season. I especially like the season opening and closing with Division games.
I'll grant you that it seems odd.

I don't care about divisional teams anymore because of what I stated previously. Rivalries are what makes the division. In fact, I couldn't stand divisional games during the dynasty years because they were so boring.
However, the AFCE was must watch TV from 1996-1999. AFC West, NFC Central and NFC East were also pretty awesome in the 90's. We really haven't seen good division rivalries in a long time because of the rapid player and coach turnover. The last good rivalry was the 49ers and Seahawks between 2011-2013 and Baltimore and Pittsburgh in the late 2000's. Had the Colts not left the AFC East, the Pats/Colts rivalry would've gone nuclear.
Of course they should. The NFL is not like the other leagues. It only play a 17 (was 16) game season, and 6 of those games are played inside the the divisions. Make the NFL an 82 game season, and then you can screw up the playoffs in the same way that the NBA has done it.
