Faith, Hope, Love

Many know 1 Corinthians 13:13

And now abide faith, hope, love, these three;
But the greatest of these is love.

The meaning behind this is often lost though. Why is love the greatest of the three? Two answers:

1. God IS Love. More verses on this fact later.

2. Heaven is all about love. However, there will be no faith and hope in heaven. There is no NEED for them! Faith and hope are God's gift to us on this side of heaven for salvation. We walk by faith not sight. In heaven, we will walk by sight...surrounded by love.

I don't know exactly where to put this, but I thought it was a very interesting answer to someone who was very snidely putting down belief in god.

This is probably the best answer I've ever heard to the question, "Why did God create evil?"

A professor at the university asked his students the following question:

“Everything that exists was created by God?”
One student bravely answered:
“Yes, it was created by God.”

The professor asked :
“If God created everything, then God created evil, since it exists. And according to the principle that our deeds define ourselves, then God is evil.”

The student became silent after hearing such an answer. The professor was very pleased with himself. He boasted to students for proving once again that faith in God is a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said:
“Can I ask you a question, professor?”
"Of course," replied the professor.

“Professor, is cold a thing?”
“What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you ever been cold?”
Students laughed at the young man's question.

The young man answered:
“Actually, sir, cold doesn't exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is actually the absence of heat. A person or object can be studied on whether it has or transmits energy.
Absolute zero (-460 degrees Fahrenheit) is a complete absence of heat. All matter becomes inert and unable to react at this temperature. Cold does not exist. We created this word to describe what we feel in the absence of heat.”

The student continued:
“Professor, does darkness exist?”
“Of course it exists.” said the professor.
“You're wrong again, sir. Darkness also does not exist. Darkness is actually the absence of light. We can study the light but not the darkness. We can use Newton's prism to spread white light across multiple colors and explore the different wavelengths of each color. You can't measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into the world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you tell how dark a certain space is? You measure how much light is presented. Isn't it so? Darkness is a term man uses to describe what happens in the absence of light.”

In the end, the young man asked the professor:
“Sir, does evil exist?”
This time it was uncertain, the professor answered:
“Of course, as I said before. We see him every day. Cruelty, numerous crimes and violence throughout the world. These examples are nothing but a manifestation of evil.”

To this, the student answered:
“Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist for itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is like darkness and cold—a man-made word to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not faith or love, which exist as light and warmth. Evil is the result of the absence of Divine love in the human heart. It’s the kind of cold that comes when there is no heat, or the kind of darkness that comes when there’s no light.”

I was going to slightly disagree by saying God ALLOWS evil, doesn't create it.

But the rest of the message pretty much states that. I agree.

Most of these "gotcha questions" - Why does God allow X to happen if he's all powerful? being pretty common - have one simple answer.

Free will.

God gave us this gift, and does not allow himself to intervene or force us against our free will. A world of mindless worshippers is meaningless. We wouldn't grow and learn. We wouldn't develop and dissect the mysteries of the universe. I truly believe that God feels joy when we use these gifts (and cringes when we misuse them).

Exactly. If we didn't have the freedom to deny God and do evil, any love for God or faith wouldn't be real.

Bad stuff happens to good people and the innocent. Fortunately, this life is extremely short in the long run. Eternity is forever. And the joy in heaven is unimaginable to us. Those who suffered (especially kids) have that now.

this is one of the better arguments I've seen made for it, very interesting

why would God allow evil?

Its one of the struggles I have, like even devout people of faith can pray and still get cancer and die, but an awful person could get cancer and live, or never get cancer at all

Evil action is a product of choice. Choice is a product of free will. Free will is what makes us human rather than a child's set of toys. In the end, almost everything comes back to that.

Things like allergies, cancer, random attacks by dangerous creatures outside of our food chain (venomous spiders, for example) are where "free will" fails as an easy answer, and the question of evil often becomes an issue of men questioning God's morality in some way.

Just my $.02

yea that makes a lot of sense regarding free will, choices, etc to explain evil

doesnt necessarily explain the horrid things that happen to people like cancer, etc.. not sure if dues was suggesting that those people may not have been as strong of faith as they thought or something, but that wouldn't explain things like that happening to children

thats one of the only struggles i have with the idea

My understanding is that the strife we face, regardless of how horrible it is, is a test of our faith in this temporary part of life that we have

This life is temporary. VERY temporary. The life afterwards is eternal. VERY untemporary. And it's the one that matters.

If you view this life as the more important, it is natural to question anything that negatively impacts it.

What comforts me: Any child who has died, been killed, etc is now in a place unimaginably greater than here. They are rejoicing. No tears, no pain, no sorrow. And that's forever now! Any saved person who has died too soon or been killed is in that same place. Forever. Knowing that is your future makes bearing hardships here a lot easier.

This does not make evil, cancer, and all that ok. It sucks. But that's the roulette wheel of living with free will on earth and not in Paradise. We'll cry and mourn those earthly realities, especially when it involves children. Of course. But the promise of God should be a comfort.

Keep your head down and protect yourself and your own as much as you can. Most importantly, seek salvation for yourself and others. It's never too late for any person no matter his past. Until it is too late. We never know when that roof is going to fall on us. The end.
