This is something I just will never understand because of my gender.
They could, but if I was in that position I would think, anyone can pay to get laid. I have a trophy 24/7 at my beck and call. She's with me because she "loves*" me and not just because I pay her. It also presents a better display to society. It makes him appear to be more virile as well.
* This is an often mistaken thought IMO.

It's really easy to sum up. Although the summation isn't a 100% thing, it hits the big things:
- You "pay" a trophy wife/girlfriend for sex, excitement, and appearance/presence.
- You pay a prostitute/escort for sex and/or time, leaving, and discretion a/k/a silence.
