A consumer thread

It still boggles my mind that there are people out there who like self-checkout lanes. They've all got to go:

Self-checkout is checking out, and Target shoppers are not happy about it.

Target has pulled the plug on many of its self-checkout machines. The retailer announced it will now limit self-checkout to customers with 10 items or fewer. Those with fuller carts will be directed to staffed checkout lanes, which the company says it is expanding to improve efficiency.

According to Target, internal pilot tests showed the new policy improved speed and customer satisfaction at select stores.

But industry experts say theft is a major reason behind the shift...

i boggle your mind...😄

I like packing my own bags/cart so I'll check out my own groceries etc. so that I get to pack my own bags. our Costco even has self scan. love it.

When you do that, you become an unpaid employee who's creating more profit for the company. And you fuck things up for everyone else.

or...they have the same amount of employees at registers but now you're not waiting infinite time to check out, like it is at the one by me.

No.... They cut employee numbers. I've never seen it otherwise.

And that makes it worse for everyone else. Not only fewer cashiers, but those cashiers end up having to go over to the self-checkout either just to monitor or to deal with checkout issues there.

Here's commentary specific to Costco from searching on GROK.
One issue I did not think about Is a possible increase in shrinkage because of un staffed registers. I would think it wouldn't be as big of a problem in Costco because they look at your stuff before you leave the store.

I don't know for a fact but aldi (at least the ones by me) almost never had more than one register open ever. they still have only 1 register open but they now have self check out. aldi's staffing is a little different as they have all their employees doing everything it seems. they would seldom have anybody at any register and you'd have to wait until somebody who was stocking shelves or whatever would notice you and come and check you out.
