They've already played 4 quarters. In the regular season, they should take the tie if there's no winner after 4 quarters. But, since they don't want ties, sudden death is the way to minimize ties, minutes played, and player injuries.

I liked sudden death, but even the older version of today's rules, where the TD won it and FG allowed the other team a possession was better this it is now.
