The Pittsburgh Steelers will reportedly be investigated by the NFL for violating a draft rule before the Philadelphia Eagles selected USC wide receiver Makai Lemon.

On Thursday, cameras caught Makai Lemon speaking on the phone to Steelers GM Omar Khan. Pittsburgh was planning to take Lemon with the No. 21 pick, but the Eagles moved up to the No. 20 spot via the Dallas Cowboys and snagged Lemon.

That move was obviously disappointing for the Steelers. And Pittsburgh fans didn’t seem all too thrilled when the team used its first-round pick on Arizona State offensive lineman Max Iheanachor.

To add insult to injury for the Steelers? Former Eagles executive Jake Rosenberg notes that the Steelers may have violated a rule by speaking to Lemon on the phone when they weren’t even on the clock:

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reached out to the NFL for comment. Indeed, it looks like Pittsburgh could be in hot water:

“On Friday, we asked the league about the rule regarding calling prospects when another team is on the clock. Here’s the response we received earlier today: “The league reviews all aspects of the Draft the week after its conclusion.”

Obviously, the Steelers’ call to Lemon will fall within the scope of that review.

It seemed to be an innocent mistake, and the Eagles likely would have picked Lemon in that spot even if they couldn’t have made the perfunctory phone call before doing so. Besides, the embarrassment of having it known that tackle Max Iheanachor was Plan B is arguably punishment enough.”
If only the Steelers had negotiated with the Cowboys to move up and take Lemon. But as always, Eagles GM Howie Roseman was a step ahead of his rivals.

With A.J. Brown presumably on his way out of Philly, it was imperative for Roseman to find a receiver in round one. Sure enough, he got one of the consensus top three receivers in this class, with Jordyn Tyson and Carnell Tate already off the board.

Lemon joins an Eagles team that has never failed to develop quality wide receivers. His skill set makes him the ideal fit in Nick Sirianni’s offense, and he should make an immediate impact with his new team.

As for the Steelers, they at least got their receiver by snagging Alabama wideout Germie Bernard with the No. 47 selection.
