Stephen Dale Starring, a dynamic wide receiver, return specialist, and collegiate quarterback, passed away on October 19, 2025, at the age of 64. This was announced by his alma mater McNeese State University in a press release. Starring's life and career were marked by versatility, athletic excellence, and a quiet determination that left a lasting imprint on both college and professional football.
Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on July 30, 1961, Starring rose to prominence at McNeese State University, where he played quarterback and shattered records. In 1980, he was named Offensive Player of the Year in the Southland Conference and MVP of the Independence Bowl, amassing 1,980 yards of total offense—including a school-record 974 rushing yards by a quarterback. He finished his college career with 3,083 passing yards and 1,906 rushing yards, ranking among McNeese’s all-time leaders.
Starring’s athleticism extended beyond the gridiron. He was a three-time Southland Conference champion in track and field, winning titles in the high hurdles and long jump, and earning All-American honors.
Selected in the third round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, Starring transitioned to wide receiver and kick returner. Over six seasons in the NFL, he played for the Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Detroit Lions. In 1986, he ranked seventh in the league in kickoff return yards and played in Super Bowl XX, where he contributed 192 all-purpose yards for the Patriots.
Starring retired with 120 receptions for 2,029 yards and 11 touchdowns, along with 2,389 kickoff return yards. In 2000, he was inducted into the McNeese State University Hall of Fame, honoring his legacy as one of the school’s most accomplished athletes.

- Texans should not have gotten rid of all the veteran OTs.
- Texans letting Diggs walk has been as bad for them as it has been great for the Patriots
