SB 60 Postgame Thread: Now that the beating is finished

I've been critical of McDaniels play calling for years. Still very happy to have him back in the fold and wouldn't change that.

I don't know enough about an OC's role, but I'm suspecting McDaniels might just be such an extraordinary coach in terms of improving the talent on the offence, that it masks his shortcomings as a play caller.

Every time the offense struggles, people blame the O.C. And in the vast majority of the times, the O.C. was not a problem.

Such is the case here.

The more I think of it, the entire game was pretty much entirely Josh McDaniels' fault.

Defense? Great.

Maye? Great in the 4th quarter once they let him do his thing down the field. A couple of turnovers, but that wouldn't have hurt us if Maye was allowed to make plays early in the game. We would have put up a lot more than 13 points.

McDaniels needed to do more to help Campbell, and he was way too conservative for most of the game. Didn't allow Maye to get into any kind of rhythm.

Big L for McDaniels.

The most obvious things:

  • Playing too straight up a lot, which led to problems with the bullrushing, as a lot of "strength" comes from being low man in the clinch. That will often happen with people on a gimpy leg
  • Very definitely having a weight transference issue with his legs, which led to problems when defending rushes who were coming from space and distance

Bonus for the "T-Rex" people:

Campbell was getting beat on mostly plays that had nothing to do with arm length. And, on at least one play where arm length would be something to think about (swim move), he was clearly beaten because he was off balance due to the way he'd moved his legs, with the swim move just finishing him off.

Gonzo might be better in pure coverage, but they use Witherspoon all over the field and as an elite blitzer, like Rod Woodson and them in their day

he was making huge impactful plays all game

Gonzo had some great coverage, but unfortunately didn't come up with any big time plays when he had a couple opportunities

im sure this game is going to linger in some of their minds for awhile, thinking about what could have been

Maye was "doing his thing" in the 4th quarter because they were playing a soft shell defense and letting him take whatever he wanted underneath, knowing he didnt have enough time to come back and win it taking 5-10 yards at a time

was a huge L for mcdaniels as well no doubt.. some pretty fucking bizarre playcalling, as well as not adjusting to what the defense was doing or giving Campbell any assistance with chips, etc

Dozens of plays they probably wish they had back.. and unfortunately to win superbowls, you can have very few, if any, plays you wish you could take back in order to win a title
