All the blame rests on one Teams coach who told either Whalen or Anderson to snap it on contact (IIRC) - so there was a different player involved who didn't practice it at all, and he got different instructions from what the rest had practiced.
The play, as practiced, was ok - see if they jump and take the bait (get caught with too many on the field while subbing), or take the delay. Pretty simple. Then some barely a coach changes it all as they as they run onto the field.
