Jim Marshall, a former NFL defensive tackle, passed away on June 3rd at the age of 87.
Born on December 30, 1937, in Wilsonville, Kentucky, was a dominant defensive end who played 20 seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Minnesota Vikings. Known for his durability and leadership, Marshall set records for most consecutive starts (270) and most games played (282) by a defensive player.
Marshall played college football at Ohio State University, where he was a standout athlete before briefly joining the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He was later drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1960, but his career truly flourished after joining the Vikings in 1961.
A key member of the Vikings' legendary "Purple People Eaters" defense, Marshall helped lead the team to four Super Bowl appearances and was a team captain for 14 seasons. Despite never winning a Super Bowl, his impact on the franchise was undeniable, earning him a place in the Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honor.
Marshall was also infamous for his "wrong-way run" in 1964, when he mistakenly returned a fumble 66 yards into his own end zone, resulting in a safety for the San Francisco 49ers. Despite this blunder, his resilience and skill made him one of the most respected players in NFL history.
He leaves behind a legacy of toughness, leadership, and dedication to the game. His contributions to football will be remembered for generations.
