If people would watch that show and really listen, really see it for what it was, they would understand the brilliance in the writing, casting, and execution.
Archie Bunker was more than the "typical" racist. Most racists are that way because of ignorance and isolation of ideas. From an early age they knew nothing else. Archie went from racist, to bigot (that is he subscribed to stereotypes) to confused to just a jerk who, when pushed, would do the right thing.
I've said it before - a master class in character development.
