A consumer thread

Yeah, but they can fuck off and die with that stuff. None of that stuff will be sufficiently tested for decades.
I'm curious to see the full analysis of what is in it. If they can honestly make this in a lab, and avoid a host of 20 syllable additives (unlike a lot of the meat substitutes out there), then you've got to be impressed. If it tastes like the real thing, that is.

Okay so I guess my question will be why in the hell would you eat that when you could eat the real thing? They're creating a problem or solving a problem where there is no problem.or there's a problem that the government is creating with all of their stupid regulations on everything.

Farmed salmon is good. Hell, there's a group in Spain that is farming caviar - once thought to be near impossible due to quality issues. Well, they did it, and it works.

Proper farming can solve so many issues - emphasis on proper. As in clean, simple.

most of what I have read about farm raised salmon has convinced me never to eat it. I think they vaccinate those fish , first of all.

Best Buy
is launching a third-party marketplace, as it tries to bulk up the variety of merchandise it offers and reverse slower sales.

Starting on Tuesday, shoppers who go to Best Buy's website and app will see products and brands that weren't available there before, including more tech-related accessories like custom video game controllers and some nontech items including seasonal decor and sports collectibles.
The company's online marketplace riffs off those of other retailers, such as Amazon

and Walmart, by relying on third-party sellers to stock, sell and ship inventory and taking a cut of their sales in the form of a commission...

Not sure that staying in house was the smart move here, but be on the lookout for some changes at Target (For those of you who shop there):

Target CEO Brian Cornell is stepping down after 11 years at the retailer, as the company faces slumping sales and backlash to its retreat on DEI.

Cornell’s departure was widely expected. Some industry analysts believed Target should bring in an outside voice to lead the company, but it opted for an internal candidate: Cornell will be replaced on February 1, 2026, by Michael Fiddelke, Target’s current chief operating officer. Fiddelke started as an intern at Target and has been at the company for 20 years.
Fiddelke was chosen from a “strong list of external and internal candidates,” Cornell said on a call with analysts Wednesday, adding that he is the “right candidate to lead our business back to growth.”

Cornell will stay on as executive chairman. He took over in 2014 and revitalized Target, overseeing a strategy to remodel stores and strengthen the chain’s online business to compete with Amazon.

But Target has been in a deep slump for years, a result largely of its own strategic missteps...

No fucking way, Google:

How many apps does it take to plan a work meeting or a dinner with friends? It likely involves bouncing between your text messaging app, an email app, a navigation app like Google Maps and perhaps a reservation app like Resy or Opentable.

Google wants to cut down on that back-and-forth with a tool coming to its newly announced Pixel 10 phones, announced on Wednesday and launching on August 28. The feature, called Magic Cue, uses artificial intelligence to analyze what you’re doing on your phone and suggest the next action...

They keep misleading about prices and/or "values" on this stuff, and they are at it again, but I'll post it here for any of you who are willing to buy into the nonsense.

McDonald's franchisees will cut the cost of combo meals to revive the chain’s image as an affordable option at a time when many consumers are keeping a close eye on their wallets.

After weeks of discussions, McDonald’s and its U.S. franchisees agreed to keep the cost of eight popular combo meals 15% lower than if the items were bought separately, according to company materials seen by The Wall Street Journal. The company promised to provide financial support if the franchisees agreed to the change, people familiar with the matter told the Journal.

A $5 breakfast and $8 Big Mac and McNugget combo meal special will also run later this year, with the company advertising them as Extra Value Meals...

Google’s YouTube has been secretly using AI to “enhance” users’ videos without their knowledge or consent, leading to a growing sense of unease among content creators.

BBC reports that YouTube, the world’s largest video-sharing platform, has been employing AI to make subtle alterations to creators’ videos without their knowledge or permission. The AI-driven changes, which include sharpening wrinkles in clothing, smoothing skin textures, and even warping ears, have left many content creators feeling unsettled and misrepresented.
The issue first came to prominence when popular music YouTubers Rick Beato and Rhett Shull noticed something amiss in their recent uploads. Beato, who runs a channel with over five million subscribers featuring popular interviews with music legends, initially thought he was imagining things when he spotted strange artifacts in his video. “The closer I looked, it almost seemed like I was wearing makeup,” he recalls. Shull, a friend of Beato’s, investigated his own posts and found similar AI-generated distortions, prompting him to create a video on the subject that has garnered over 500,000 views...

...After months of speculation and complaints from users on social media, YouTube finally acknowledged that it has been running an experiment on select YouTube Shorts, the app’s short-form video feature. The company stated that it uses “traditional machine learning technology” to unblur, denoise, and improve clarity in videos during processing, comparing the process to the enhancements made by modern smartphones when recording video.

However, experts argue that there is a significant difference between users having control over AI features on their personal devices and a company manipulating content without the consent of the creators. Samuel Woolley, the Dietrich chair of disinformation studies at the University of Pittsburgh, suggests that YouTube’s choice of words feels like a misdirection. “Machine learning is in fact a subfield of artificial intelligence,” he explains, dismissing the company’s attempt to draw a line between “traditional machine-learning” and generative AI...

Gas prices are projected to be at their cheapest point since 2020 over the Labor Day holiday weekend, according to the latest annual forecast released by industry monitor GasBuddy.

GasBuddy predicts that the gas prices on the last summer holiday weekend of 2025 will be $3.15 per gallon, a five-year low.

“Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, and when it comes to gas prices, it’s been the cheapest summer to hit the road since the pandemic, a trend that will likely continue with the potential for the national average to fall below $3 per gallon this fall,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy...
