A former Major League Baseball pitcher has been sentenced to life in prison. After committing a horrible crime against his wife’s parents, the former big leaguer will spend the rest of his time in this world behind bars without the possibility of parole.

Daniel Serafini, 51, killed his father-in-law in 2021. He broke into his wife’s parents’ house in Lake Tahoe and waited until they returned before carrying out the shooting. He killed Gary Spohr and wounded his mother-in-law, Wendy Wood, who received a gunshot wound to the head.

She needed extensive rehabilitation. Unfortunately, she died by suicide a year later. Serafini was found guilty of first-degree murder of his father-in-law and attempted murder of his mother-in-law.

Adrienne Spohr, the sister of Serafini’s wife, Erin Spohr, opened up on the situation. She spoke with reporters after the sentence.

“Dan Serafini executed my dad and left my mom to die,” Adrienne Spohr said, according to the Sacramento Bee. “My mom fought with everything she could and did not let Dan Serafini win. Dan Serafini is finally being held accountable and will spend the rest of his life behind bars.”

Prosecutors alleged that Serafini hated his wife’s parents and offered $20,000 to whoever would carry out the killings before he decided to do it himself. He joined MLB in 1992 as a first-round pick. He spent seven seasons in the league, playing for the Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, and Colorado Rockies from 1996 to 2007.
