Bresbot is lying. Well, it's more accurate to say that he's shading the heck out of the truth. John Henry has decided that he's going to make bank off of the Red Sox, rather than spending his profits making the team better. So he's keeping payroll low. We've been seeing this ever since the Mookie Betts trade. So any "top end FA" has to fit into the Henry-allotted salary numbers. And, this year, that means that you can't have anything approaching a top end FA, because they extended their ace last season.


Maybe next year, though, if they move off of their speedy but relatively defensively clueless drama queen of an older outfielder ($7.7m), the garbage reliever they acquired last season ($12m), and their Japanese DH ($18m) and free up that money... Maybe then John Henry will let the team bring in a bottom of the top sort of FA.
