I don't remember this commercial, mostly because I was on my first WestPac deployment from the middle of July 1980 onwards... But my dad used Aqua Velva; and as a little kid I always liked the way it smelled on him... Same reason I've used mostly Vitalis on my hair: because my dad did, and that's good enough for me.
Fun fact: I used to deliver newspapers when I was a kid. One of my customers was a guy named Bill Spanswick. He was called up to the Red Sox for a cup of coffee basically. His claim to fame though, was being on Tony Conigliaro's 1964 Topps rookie card.
Boggs should've been brought-up to the big club at least a full season earlier than he was; management however was still under the delusion that "all-star" 3Bman Scott Cooper was the answer there...
