Amid a season of discontent, it appears Boston Red Sox designated hitter Rafael Devers has a new home.

The Red Sox are trading Devers to the San Francisco Giants for a package centered around pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks, according to a Sunday afternoon report from Robert Murray of FanSided.

In addition to Harrison and Hicks, Murray later reported that pitcher Jose Bello and designated hitter and right fielder James Tibbs will also head east.

Devers, 28, has played his entire nine-year big-league career for Boston. He won the World Series with the team in 2018, captured Silver Sluggers in 2021 and 2023, and made All-Star teams in '21, 2022 and 2024.

In 2025, he has slashed .271/.400/.494 with 14 home runs and 57 RBIs.

However, he has also vocally criticized the Red Sox for their handling of the offseason signing of third baseman Alex Bregman—a move that put Devers's longtime home at the hot corner in flux.

The Giants are currently 41-30, and occupy the National League's second wild-card playoff spot. Boston, on the other hand, is 37-36.

Absolute clown show of a team makes a terrible trade.

So, to be clear....

The Red Sox thought that it was OK to fuck Devers over about the promise that he'd remain at 3rd base, but it was unacceptable for Devers to not do whatever they asked him after they broke that promise.
They didn't learn after the Mookie trade

What pisses me off about this is that Devers has been hitting ever since the first few games, and they waited until now to trade him for the what is very possibly going to end up turning out to be the equivalent of a bucket of warped baseballs.

They forced him off of 3rd base, and into a DH role that he wanted no part of. Then they tell the guy who's defense they just shit on by their actions that they want him back in the field, and it's supposed to be him that's the problem? Given what they had for players at the start of the season, they could have set up a rotation at 1st, 2nd, 3rd and DH, which would have given them the ability to rotate players and give Devers at least some time at 3rd, and gotten him playing some first base from day one. Instead, we're stuck with this idiocy.

And, in direct response to your post, had they treated Mookie right, none of this shit would be happening. Instead, John Henry decided that he was going to start cheaping out on the Red Sox and here we are. From writer John Simmons:

I’m super torn by all of this. On the one hand, Devers could have had a much better attitude about playing DH and giving up third base to a superior defensive player. But ownership didn’t do anything to communicate with him and shipped off yet another home-grown talent to a contender.

This organization sucks, and this trade is just the latest example of it.

Henry's doing a salary dump. He's going cheap. He's trying to sell shares in the Penguins too.

Why you ask?

Henry's been more interested in the real estate across the street from Fenway than in the actual team.

I know it probably won't happen, but, I'm going top try to get my money back for tickets I purchased. I've got tickets for 2 future games and I'm going to claim that I bought them to watch their product in the field and that product has now changed. I wanted to see Devers as part of the reason for buying tickets, and now he's no longer there. It's a different product now. I understand if he was still there and didn't play, that's a chance you take. There's no chance I'll see him now.

I think I'm dead in the water with this though. But, at least I can complain about the trade to them. Let them know how we feel.
